OVERVIEW

Grand Roy Pan Angels is a community-based steel pan orchestra. The orchestra comprises students from ages six to eighteen. The idea to form a steel band to serve the village of Grand Roy and its surrounding areas came from a couple of like-minded individuals who believed in the power of the arts as part of community development.

The goals of the orchestra are:

  • Harness the interests and skills of local students by developing their pan-playing abilities;

  • Provide students with exposure by entering local and national steel pan competitions; and

  • Attending social play-outs and other events, allowing players to share their skills with the broader Grenadian community.

  • Today, Grand Roy Angels is an integral part of the Grand Roy and broader St. John community.

HISTORY

This steel pan was formally started on 16th May 2006, in Grand Roy, in the parish of St. John, Grenada. This was an effort to revive the steel pan in Grand Roy. In the past, the community had a vibrant steel pan orchestra. The goal was to get young people interested in playing music through the medium of pan.

Objectives

  • To teach new children the skill of playing pan and to increase the appreciation of steel pan playing and other related cultural fields in our community

  • To contribute to community development that positively impacts the children, youth and the general community

  • To assist in their academic development where appropriate
